On the sidelines of the 22nd African Climate Outlook Forum (ACCOF 22), dedicated to anticipating the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon expected in 2026 2027 and enhancing the preparedness of African countries, the Executive Secretary of GWP WA, Dr. Amadou Lamine NDIAYE, and the Director General of ACMAD, Dr. Ousmane NDIAYE, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
This partnership aims to strengthen synergies between climate services and water governance, thereby improving planning, management, and decision making in a context marked by climate variability and change in West Africa.
Through this MoU, the two institutions commit to:
- Systematically integrating climate information and forecasts into water policies, strategies, and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) tools;
- Developing joint initiatives to build stakeholder capacity;
- Facilitating data and knowledge sharing;
- Supporting the establishment of early warning systems;
- Promoting coordinated approaches to prevent risks related to droughts, floods, and other extreme climate events.
The signing ceremony was attended by representatives of the Mono Basin Authority (ABM), the Niger Basin Authority (NBA), and the International Commission of the Congo Ubangi Sangha Basin (CICOS), highlighting the importance of regional cooperation.
With this agreement, GWP WA and ACMAD reaffirm their shared commitment to contributing to a West Africa that is better informed, more resilient to climate risks, and better prepared to ensure the sustainable and equitable management of its water resources.
