{"id":2297,"date":"2021-03-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/caribbean\/news\/voices-from-women-leaders-in-the-gwp-c-network-international-womens-day-2021\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T14:59:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T13:59:39","slug":"voices-from-women-leaders-in-the-gwp-c-network-international-womens-day-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/caribbean\/news\/voices-from-women-leaders-in-the-gwp-c-network-international-womens-day-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Voices from Women Leaders in the GWP-C Network \u2013 International Women\u2019s Day 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This year\u2019s theme for International Women\u2019s Day (IWD) is <b>\u201cWomen in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world.\u201d<\/b> It celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C) asked some female leaders within its network: <b>What is your number ONE priority when it comes to working towards a gender equal future in a COVID-19 world?<\/b>&nbsp;Here is what they had to say:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simone Lewis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/caribbean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/04\/simone-lewis-iwd-2021-1.jpg\" height=\"287\" width=\"304\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cAs a female leader in the Caribbean, my number one priority when it comes to working towards a gender equal future in a COVID-19 world, would be to equip both males and females with the requisite tools and knowledge required to enhance their quality of life, while coping with the stressors related to COVID-19 on the way towards enjoying a climate resilient future.\u201d<\/i><i> &#8211; <\/i><b>Simone Lewis, Regional Coordinator of GWP-C<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<b>Anika Sutherland<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/caribbean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/04\/iwd-2021-anika-sutherland-1.jpg\" height=\"496\" width=\"322\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201c<\/i><i>The COVID-19 pandemic has created a true appreciation of the water and wastewater sectors&#8217; critical role in global public health responses and highlighted the gender disparities. As such, my top priority is to work collaboratively to share knowledge, support capacity building and contribute to value added products that enable a gender diverse space in these evolving sectors.\u201d \u2013 <\/i><b>Anika Sutherland, GWP-C Technical Committee Member<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Paulette Bynoe<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/caribbean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/04\/iwd-2021-paulette-bynoe-1.jpg\" height=\"955\" width=\"735\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cPromoting and supporting greater participation in the decision-making process for responding to and recovery&nbsp;from hazards.\u201d \u2013 <\/i><b>Dr. Paulette Bynoe, Senior Lecturer at The University of Guyana and GWP-C Steering Committee Member<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Arpita Mandal<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/caribbean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/04\/arpita-mandal-iwd-2021-scaled-1.jpg\"><\/b><i>\u201cSafe water and secured resources for the world pre and post COVID, crossing all gender gaps.\u201d<\/i> \u2013 <b>Dr. Arpita Mandal, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography and Geology at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus and GWP-C Technical Committee Member<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"xxmsolistparagraph\"><b>Leana Bradshaw<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"xxmsolistparagraph\"><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/caribbean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/04\/leana-bradshaw-iwd-2021-1.jpg\" height=\"1192\" width=\"932\"><\/b><i>\u201cI try to ensure that everyone who works with me is afforded a fair opportunity to execute tasks that may seem gender-biased.
