{"id":2343,"date":"2020-03-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-27T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/caribbean\/news\/trinidadian-luke-smith-wins-gwp-c-world-water-day-2020-photo-contest\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T14:59:41","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T13:59:41","slug":"trinidadian-luke-smith-wins-gwp-c-world-water-day-2020-photo-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/caribbean\/news\/trinidadian-luke-smith-wins-gwp-c-world-water-day-2020-photo-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"Trinidadian Luke Smith Wins GWP-C World Water Day 2020 Photo Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The competition called for participants to submit a photo taken in the Caribbean, depicting <b>\u201cTaking good care of water.\u201d<\/b> GWP-C saw this as a simple and effective way to promote the message that efficient use of water can help fight climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The winning photo captioned <b><i>\u201cA closed cycle of growth\u201d <\/i><\/b>was submitted by Trinidadian Luke Smith.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/caribbean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/04\/luke-simith-2020-winning-photo-scaled-1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A closed cycle of growth. <\/em>Photo by: Luke Smith | Location: Trinidad <br><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When asked about the idea behind the photo in the context of the competition\u2019s theme, Luke said \u201cHydroponics systems are relatively closed systems, using less&nbsp;water&nbsp;than conventional soil-based gardening. The system&nbsp;water&nbsp;can be reused, allowing for conservation of water embodying the theme of Taking good care of water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apart from this photo being ranked the highest amongst all submissions, the competition\u2019s judges made mention of the photo\u2019s very important relevance in making the link between water security and agriculture. Winner Luke Smith indicated that this was precisely why he was compelled to enter the Photo Contest, explaining the need to highlight WWD and also show the concept of water security in relation to food security.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/caribbean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/04\/ls-2020-pic-2-scaled-1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Luke Smith seen in photo above.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>About the Winner<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/caribbean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/04\/ls-2020-pic-3-scaled-1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Luke Smith<\/b> is the Caribbean Regional Coordinator for the <a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtforfood.org\">Thought for Food Challenge<\/a> and also the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Officer of <a href=\"https:\/\/whyfarmit.org\">We Help You-th Farm (WHYFARM)<\/a>. He is a freelance Agriculture Blogger, Social Media Reporter and &nbsp;Photographer, who specialises&nbsp;in agricultural photography&nbsp;and videography. Luke is also the co-founder of an early stage start-up \u201cSeed4Dsower.\u201d He firmly believes that every seed has the potential of an entire ecosystem within it. Through his work, he aspires to germinate seeds that will increase the harvest in others.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/caribbean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2026\/04\/ls-2020-winner-scaled-1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Luke holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Natural Resources Management and Agribusiness, with Certificates in Natural Resources Management for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods, Youth in Entrepreneurship Business on Agribusiness Enterprises and a Certificate of completion in AGRIMONITOR.<\/p>\n<p>The relationship between water security, agriculture and food security is extremely important. Water is key to food security, which is why managing it efficiently is essential. In his work, Luke plays an active role in promoting this message.
