In the context of increasing climate and environmental pressures, sediment science is becoming a key pillar of sustainable river basin management.

Sediments as a foundation of healthy and resilient rivers

Sediment transport is a fundamental process shaping river morphology, biodiversity, and the ecological functioning of river systems. The natural movement of sediments supports habitat formation, nutrient cycling, and connectivity between rivers and floodplains.
However, long-term human interventions—such as dam construction, river regulation, and land-use changes—have significantly disrupted sediment continuity. This has led to ecosystem degradation, altered river morphology, and a loss of natural river dynamics.
The Danube, as one of Europe’s most important river systems, is strongly affected by these pressures, making a deeper understanding of sediment processes essential for its long-term protection and restoration.

Programme highlights and activities

The summer school programme combines theoretical lectures with practical activities and field-based learning directly on the Danube River. Participants are engaging in topics such as:

Fluvial sediment transport processes and river hydromorphodynamics

Advanced sediment monitoring techniques, including ADCP, MBES, suspended sediment monitoring, bedload tracers and AI-based image analysis

Field and laboratory methods for sediment sampling, sediment quality assessment and analysis

Earth Observation, data processing and interpretation for sediment monitoring and river basin management

Impacts of river regulation and hydropower on sediment continuity and river morphology

Integrated sediment management for river restoration, biodiversity conservation and climate resilience

Linking scientific knowledge with practical applications through field demonstrations, laboratory work and interdisciplinary collaboration

The programme includes lectures, field measurements, laboratory exercises, demonstrations of advanced monitoring technologies, and group work focused on real-world water management challenges.

A key part of the learning experience is hands-on exposure to innovative monitoring methods and discussions with experts from leading European research institutions. These sessions help participants understand how sediment dynamics can be measured, analysed, and applied in practical decision-making for sustainable river management.

Collaboration, knowledge exchange and “learning by doing”

One of the core strengths of the iNNO SED Summer School is its strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and experiential learning. Participants work in teams, exchange knowledge across disciplines and countries, and develop the ability to connect scientific research with practical water management challenges.
The programme fosters dialogue between young scientists and experienced experts, encouraging the development of new ideas and innovative approaches for sustainable sediment management.

The iNNO SED Summer School 2026 highlights the growing importance of sediment science as an integral part of sustainable river management and climate adaptation strategies. By combining research, innovation, and hands-on experience, the programme provides a strong platform for future solutions in water management.

The Global Water Partnership Central and Eastern Europe (Global Water Partnership Central and Eastern Europe) thanks all partners, lecturers, and participants for their active engagement and looks forward to the continuation of the programme and the new insights it will bring.

Role of GWP CEE: GWP CEE acted as organiser of the iNNO SED Summer School 2026, contributing to programme design, coordination of sessions, facilitation of knowledge exchange between partners, and support in linking scientific research with practical approaches to sustainable sediment and river basin management in the Danube
