The year 2022 <\/span>was challenging and not easy. <\/span>With t<\/span>he <\/span>CEE <\/span>region <\/span>still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic<\/span>, <\/span>a war <\/span>broke out<\/span> in Europe, hurting <\/span><\/span>our Ukrainian colleagues and friends<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span> A drought hit the continent, <\/span>pro<\/span>bably the<\/span> mo<\/span>st serious one i<\/span>n 500 ye<\/span>ars<\/span> in some countries<\/span>.<\/span> GWP CEE continued its work on integrated water resources management <\/span>involving stakeholders and partners in transboundary cooperation, climate, SDGs, youth <\/span>issues<\/span> among others.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> <\/span><\/span>GWP CEE Summer School<\/span><\/span><\/a>, our youth flagship event<\/span>, was restarted<\/span>. F<\/span>or one <\/span>week in June<\/span> 2022, <\/span><\/span>young and aspiring water specialists from <\/span>Central and Eastern Europe <\/span>(CEE) <\/span>practiced problem-based learning <\/span>on Integrated<\/span> Water Resource<\/span> Management <\/span>(IWRM) <\/span>at the Tisza Lake in Hungary.

<\/span><\/span>Climate <\/span>and transboundary cooperation<\/span> are important f<\/span>or GWP<\/span>CEE <\/span>– our <\/span>Integrated Drought Management <\/span>Programme<\/span>s<\/span>upported work on the ground <\/span><\/span>in<\/span>the Drin Basin and Armenia<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/span>The<\/span>newly <\/span>launched <\/span><\/span>Community of Practice<\/span><\/span><\/a> on Nature Based Solutions (NBS) <\/span>in Water Management <\/span>at<\/span>tracted practitioners from around the world<\/span>. It <\/span><\/span>received a huge support from <\/span>a<\/span> seminar<\/span><\/span><\/a>, organized by GWP CEE and University of Ljubljana.

<\/span>The year ended big, with <\/span><\/span>Danube Art Master 2022 environmental arts competition<\/span><\/span><\/a> organized to<\/span>gether with the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River <\/span>(ICPDR) <\/span>receiving a <\/span>significant number<\/span> of artworks from young students<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Capacity<\/span> building and international cooperation<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

In 2022, <\/span>a two-year INTERREG TEACHER-CE project<\/span><\/span><\/a> was <\/span>finalized, <\/span><\/span>supporting <\/span>water management adaptation to climate change in Central <\/span>Europe<\/span>. A <\/span><\/span> new report by Sustainable Sanitation Taskforce<\/span><\/span><\/a> shed<\/span> light on the current situation of wastewater collection and treatment in the region. <\/span>The Taskforce also <\/span>provided <\/span><\/span>feedback<\/span> to the EU Nutrients Action Plan<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span> 

<\/span>Continuing with our efforts to <\/span>provide <\/span>knowledge and build new <\/span>capacities<\/span>, GWP CEE reopened <\/span>the <\/span>very<\/span> successful <\/span><\/span>Danube Floodplain Online Course<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/a> Another useful material came from the TEACHER-CE project, which <\/span>developed <\/span><\/span>tools for climate change adaptation<\/span><\/span><\/a> and boosted integrated participatory water management.<\/span> We then addressed the <\/span><\/span>new Danube River Basin plans<\/span><\/span><\/a> prepared under the auspices <\/span>of<\/span>,<\/span> ICPDR<\/span>,<\/span> focusing on climate resilience and NBS<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> 

<\/span>Eager to <\/span>share their experience<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>GWP Romania<\/span><\/span><\/a> focused on technological advancement and <\/span>important steps to evaluate the <\/span><\/span>danger of microplastics in Danube<\/span><\/span><\/a>. <\/span>GWP Slovenia <\/span>organized <\/span>the <\/span><\/span>Water-Related Disaster Risk Management in Changing Climate online panel<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

For future generations<\/span> <\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

I<\/span>n February<\/span> 2022<\/span>, we <\/span>had the young professionals from <\/span><\/span>Erasmus+ Youth for Water and Climate <\/span>Programme<\/span>first cohort<\/span><\/span><\/a> from<\/span> Hungary, Slovakia, Belgium, <\/span>France<\/span> and Sweden.<\/span><\/span>The first <\/span>live event<\/span><\/span><\/a> they experienced <\/span>took place <\/span>in Budapest, Hungary.<\/span> The <\/span>program<\/span> was a big boost to particip<\/span>ants\u2019 skills as they started <\/span><\/span>attending various global events<\/span><\/span><\/a> already as speakers, co-<\/span>organizers<\/span> or panelists.<\/span><\/span> 

<\/span>On regional level, we <\/span>established<\/span> the <\/span><\/span>GWP CEE Youth Fundraising Panel<\/span><\/span><\/a>. <\/span>GWP CEE intern, Bence <\/span>B\u00edr\u00f3<\/span>, is an excellent example as he <\/span><\/span>voiced his opinion and represented the region<\/span><\/span><\/a> at the Climate Change Conference<\/span> of Youth<\/span> 2022<\/span>.<\/span> His journey is quite inspiring, and <\/span><\/span>we interviewed him<\/span><\/span><\/a> just recently to share his story with you.<\/span> 

<\/span>Among other notable events, we are sure to mention the celebration of the World Water Day by <\/span>joining with the <\/span><\/span>Circular Economy Taskforce to prepare a report<\/a><\/span><\/span> from Bulgaria, Hungary, <\/span>Romania<\/span> and Slovenia.<\/span><\/span> 

<\/span>GWP CEE took part in<\/span> the <\/span><\/span>25<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> International River Symposium<\/span><\/span><\/a> in Vienna, Austria,<\/span><\/span> bring<\/span>ing together<\/span> science, business, communit<\/span>ies, <\/span>N<\/span>G<\/span>Os <\/span>a<\/span>nd government to advance <\/span>efforts towards resilient rivers<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
