Through<\/span>out<\/span> the history, f<\/span>loodplains were the lively part of landscape<\/span>s<\/span> where different land<\/span> management was <\/span>harmonized<\/span> with <\/span>repetitive<\/span> flooding. <\/span>With the <\/span>growing <\/span>intensification<\/span> of land use, the floodplains diminished, were drained, <\/span>settled<\/span> or even<\/span> replaced with<\/span> heavil<\/span>y polluting factories<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>All that is <\/span>multiplied<\/span> <\/span>by<\/span> infrastructure to prevent overflooding<\/span>.<\/span> T<\/span>he risk of flooding became hazard<\/span> to loss of property and li<\/span>ves<\/span>. <\/span>Both<\/span> <\/span>aspects<\/span> <\/span>are <\/span>increasing under the climate change. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, a<\/span>ccording<\/span> to t<\/span>he<\/span> <\/span>recent management and scientific evidenc<\/span>e<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>bringing river to its natural <\/span>path<\/span> of flooding is the best possible solution to tackle multiple water, drought, <\/span>biodiversity<\/span> and land managemen<\/span>t <\/span>related <\/span>challenges of our time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Danube Floodplain project<\/a> <\/span>proves that<\/span> this is possible<\/span>, now with<\/span> <\/span>brand-new<\/span> online course<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>It is <\/span>designed to <\/span>explain how<\/span> a <\/span>flood mitigation and floodplain restoration are compatible, and how we <\/span>can<\/span> manage floodplains to preserve habitats and improve ecosystem services<\/span> <\/span>using<\/span> the cross-cutting<\/span> management tools developed for the Danube region, and applicable across its boun<\/span>d<\/span>aries. <\/span>The course will <\/span>tackle the historical floodplain loss,<\/span> current<\/span> flood risk, and applica<\/span>ble<\/span> case studies<\/span> during which<\/span> we<\/span>\u2019ll<\/span> discuss the win-win measures.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Danube Floodplain Online Course<\/a> is the first course offered on edX by an EU Interreg project<\/span> and <\/span>offers dynamic and engaging lectures <\/span>that<\/span> will <\/span>increase your <\/span>understanding of floodplain management approach<\/span>es<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

With this course, <\/span>the project partners<\/span> want to address <\/span>junior<\/span> and mid-level <\/span>professionals <\/span>from local, regional or national water authorities and disaster risk reduction area, the SMEs <\/span>focused on<\/span> flood<\/span>s<\/span>, water management sector, and students \u2013<\/span> <\/span>the future managers.<\/span> <\/span>Everyone<\/span>, who <\/span>is<\/span> willing to develop competences in floodplain management<\/span> is invited to join<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>
