{"id":2659,"date":"2015-12-18T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-12-18T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/cee\/news\/gwp-at-unece-water-convention-session\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T08:13:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T07:13:20","slug":"gwp-at-unece-water-convention-session","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/cee\/archive\/gwp-at-unece-water-convention-session\/","title":{"rendered":"GWP at UNECE Water Convention Session"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>74 countries, Parties and non-Parties to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unece.org\/env\/water\/text\/text.html\">the Water Convention<\/a>, were represented in Budapest to review the progress achieved in the Convention\u2019s implementation. They discussed how the Convention can best support transboundary water cooperation worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The Meeting of the Parties addressed a variety of topics including assessing the water-food-energy-ecosystems nexus in transboundary basins of Alazani and Syrdarya rivers in Central Asia and Caucasus.<\/p>\n<p>A Georgian delegation was headed by Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Natural Resources of Georgia, Ms. Catherine Grigalava.&nbsp; A new memorandum was signed by Georgia and UNECE, aiming to improve water governance through National Policy Dialogues under the European Union Water Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>GWP Central and Eastern Europe co-organized <a href=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/assets\/legacy\/globalassets\/global\/activities\/news\/december-2015\/side-event-benefits-transboundary-water-cooperation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a side event on the benefits of transboundary rivers.<\/a>&nbsp; Bernardas Paukstys of GWP Lithuania gave a presentation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/gwp-in-action\/News-and-Activities\/Successful-collaboration-on-transboundary-rivers\/\">on the successful&nbsp; transboundary collaboration in the Neman and Pregolya River Basins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This collaboration has benefitted the Kaliningrad Oblast, Poland, Lithuania, and Belarus, and it was the first practical transboundary project between two EU and two non-EU countries. The project demonstrated the willingness for cooperation between experts and some institutions. Such cooperation may generate economic benefits, increase human well-being, and enhance environmental sustainability and political stability, said Mr. Paukstys in his presentation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unece.org\/env\/water\/mop7.html#\/\">The UNECE session<\/a> gathered about 350 participants in total: representatives of countries, international organisations, NGOs, and academia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: The UNECE meeting in Budapest<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The seventh session of the Meeting of the Parties to the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes took place on 17-21 November 2015 in Budapest, Hungary.
