The Global Water Partnership Central and Eastern Europe<\/strong>, together with the iNNO SED project<\/strong> coordinator, Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME)<\/strong>, BOKU<\/strong> and Aqua-Terra Lab<\/strong>, has successfully launched the iNNO SED Summer School 2026, taking place in G\u00f6d on the banks of the Danube River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme brings together early-career researchers, young professionals, and advanced students from across Europe<\/strong> with the aim of deepening their understanding of sediment transport processes, river hydromorphology, modern monitoring techniques, and innovative approaches to sediment management. In the context of increasing climate and environmental pressures, sediment science is becoming a key pillar of sustainable river basin management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sediments as a foundation of healthy and resilient rivers<\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sediment transport is a fundamental process shaping river morphology, biodiversity, and the ecological functioning of river systems. The natural movement of sediments supports habitat formation, nutrient cycling, and connectivity between rivers and floodplains.
However, long-term human interventions\u2014such as dam construction, river regulation, and land-use changes\u2014have significantly disrupted sediment continuity. This has led to ecosystem degradation, altered river morphology, and a loss of natural river dynamics.
The Danube, as one of Europe\u2019s most important river systems, is strongly affected by these pressures, making a deeper understanding of sediment processes essential for its long-term protection and restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
