{"id":2632,"date":"2020-08-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-04T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/central-africa\/news\/gabon-and-sao-tome-and-principe-register-an-increase-in-the-level-of-implementation-of-iwrm\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T16:08:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T15:08:39","slug":"gabon-and-sao-tome-and-principe-register-an-increase-in-the-level-of-implementation-of-iwrm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/central-africa\/fr\/news\/gabon-and-sao-tome-and-principe-register-an-increase-in-the-level-of-implementation-of-iwrm\/","title":{"rendered":"Gabon and Sao Tome and Principe register an increase in the level of Implementation of IWRM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Within the framework of the second round of reporting on SDG 6 , GWP and partners are supporting the monitoring and reporting process on SDG 6.5.1 through the SDG 6 Support Program.&nbsp; The process which started in April 2020 culminated in the organisation of a stakeholder consultation on July 23rd and 24th 2020 in Gabon and Sao Tome and Principe respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In Gabon, the two day (July 23rd \u2013 24th ) workshop brought together ten stakeholders from divers sectors per session to ensure respect of government COVID-19 prevention measures. Overall, the stakeholders in Gabon agreed that the degree of IWRM implementation in 2020 is <b>29%,<\/b> marking a <b>15% increase<\/b> from the <b>14% score<\/b> registered in the 2017 baseline report. The evaluation indicates that the country was most performant in the \u201c<strong>Institution and Participation<\/strong>\u201d <strong>(33%)<\/strong> section and weakest in <strong>\u201cEnabling Environment<\/strong>\u201d <strong>(23%).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/central-africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/04\/109069035_3156038364485826_5599274281741956746_o-1.jpg\" height=\"607\" width=\"1080\">However, the country\u2019s level of IWRM is still within the <b>\u201clow\u201d<\/b> grade class (2018 Status Report on the Implementation of IWRM in AFRICA), and thus urgently needs to identify priority actions geared towards accelerating IWRM implementation in the country. Also it was highlighted in during the workshop that the low score in 2017 was the result of poor undertsanding of the questionaire and the lack of a participatory process in elaborating the baseline report \u2013 a situation which was avoided during this round of reporting thanks to GWP-CAf\u2019s support to the country.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/central-africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/04\/famille-2-1.jpg\" height=\"607\" width=\"1080\"><\/p>\n<p><b>The level of Implementation of IWRM in <\/b><b>Sao Tome and Principe progresses from \u201clow\u201d to a \u201cMedium Low\u201d Grade<\/b><\/p>\n<p>For Sao Tome and Principe, the stakeholder consulation which was organized by the <strong>Directorate General of Natural Resources and Energy (DGRNE)<\/strong> in the Ministry of Public Works, Infrastructure, Natural Resources and the Environment in collaboration with the support of the <strong>Sao Tome and Principe Country Water Partnership (CWP-STP)<\/strong>, was attended by&nbsp; twenty nine participants drawn from key water sector stakeholders including government, civil society, technical and financial partners and private sector institutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/central-africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/04\/whatsapp-image-2020-07-24-at-15.18.01-6-1.jpeg\" height=\"960\" width=\"1280\"><\/p>\n<p>The consultation was a mix of group work and plenary session discussions that had as output a participatory evaluation of the degree of IWRM implementation, as well as recommendations to accelerate IWRM implementation in the country before the third reporting cycle in 2023. Speaking at the workshop, <strong>Madam Valdemira TAVERES,<\/strong> Director of the Agronomy Department and Chair of Sao Tome and Principe CWP said, <em><strong>\u201cIWRM concerns us all! It\u2019s everyone\u2019s duty and it demands that we work together to achieve it\u201d.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/central-africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/04\/dsc_0688-1.jpg\" height=\"683\" width=\"1024\"><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In comparison to the 2017 total report score of <b>23%<\/b> the score obtained at the end of the workshop show&nbsp; a <b>10%<\/b>&nbsp; increase in the overall score&nbsp; to <b>33%<\/b> in 2020, moving the country from <b>\u201cLow<\/b>\u201dgrade levelin 2017 to \u201c<b>meduim -low\u201d grade in 2020<\/b>.The evaluation indicates that country was most performant on the \u201c<b>Enabling Environment\u201d (38%)<\/b> and weakest in \u201c<b>Financing\u201d (20%).<\/b> While improvements of at least 10% point were observed from 2017 to 2020 for <strong>\u201cEnabling Environment\u201d (14%),<\/strong> <strong>\u201cInstitutions and Participation\u201d (15%)<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cManagement Instruments\u201d (10%)<\/strong>, the score for \u201cFinancing\u201d did not change and remained the same at its 2017 value of 20%.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/central-africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/04\/dsc_0706-1.jpg\" height=\"683\" width=\"1024\"><\/p>\n<p>The following key &nbsp;recommendations were made by the stakeholders to advance IWRM implementation in the country :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mobilize resources (technical and financial) &nbsp;for the proper implementation of IWRM;<\/li>\n<li>Organize targeted capacity building activities for technical or planning level staff of water related institutions;<\/li>\n<li>Create a national platform for the dissermination and ownership of IWRM;<\/li>\n<li>Adopt and implement the recommendations in each section of the questionnaire.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>15% increase for Gabon and 10% increase for Sao Tome and Principe &#8211;
