{"id":759,"date":"2026-02-09T20:10:22","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T20:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/central-africa\/?page_id=759"},"modified":"2026-03-29T14:27:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-29T13:27:18","slug":"sdg-6-5-1-iwrm-action-plan","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/central-africa\/work-areas\/our-programmes\/sdg-6-5-1-iwrm-action-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"SDG 6.5.1 IWRM Action Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-2-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-dd128dc3f07be98c95a0a3a1677c4875\"><strong><strong>Following the 2023 third round of reporting on target 6.5.1 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which monitors the level of implementation of Integrated Water Resource Management, Cameroon recorded an overall \u201cmedium- low\u201d score of 49% and outlined challenges hindering the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 by 2030. To address these challenges, an SDG 6.5.1 Stage 2 programme is underway in the country, implemented by the Ministry of Water Resources and supported by UNEP-DHI and the Global Water Partnership. Under this Stage 2 programme, the government will elaborate a National IWRM Plan which outlines strategies to foster climate-resilient water management in the country.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the invitation of the Minister of Water and Energy, the first consultation meeting of stakeholders working in the water and climate sector was held on\u00a0<strong>September 26, 2025<\/strong>, in the conference room of the Department of Water Resources Management office in Yaound\u00e9. The meeting&#8217;s main objective was the validation of the proposed methodology by the consultant recruited by GWP-Central Africa to develop the IWRM Action Plan. The session was chaired by\u00a0<strong>Madam Ngoh Biemble P\u00e9lagie,<\/strong>\u00a0Director of the Hydrological Information System Unit, representing the Director General of Water Resources, and moderated by the consultant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her welcome speech, Madam Ngo acknowledged the progress made in achieving SDG target 6.5.1 while pointing out the need to \u201cmultiply joint endeavours to tackle persistent challenges, especially related to climate change\u201d. She also highlighted the importance of the meeting to \u201cpromote stakeholder participation in the process to ensure a realistic and inclusive IWRM Action Plan, capable of supporting the country\u2019s National Development Strategy 2030\u201d. The technical session featured presentations on the GWP and UNEP DHI SDG 6 Support IWRM Program, the consultant\u2019s task outline, the proposed methodological approach and data collection tools to be used in the elaboration of the IWRM plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the discussions, participants provided key recommendations to guide the next steps. They emphasised the need to identify strategic documents relevant to IWRM in Cameroon, compile a comprehensive list of stakeholders based on the mapping tool and ensure full participation of all relevant ministries. A multi-stakeholder task force for the project has been set up by the Ministry of Water, and members agreed to finalise its terms of reference, establish a communication platform, and hold future planning meetings. A first national consultation meeting is planned for the end of October to validate the evaluation report of the 2019 IWRM Action Plan and set the direction for the new Action
