In doing so, it focuses on contributing to and advocating for solutions for critical challenges to water security, such as climate change impacts, urbanisation, food insecurity, energy insecurity, ecosystems threats, unemployment, migration, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/mediterranean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/03\/16-november-8862.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1927\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7777988769226596;width:1200px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/mediterranean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/03\/16-november-8862.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/mediterranean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/03\/16-november-8862-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/mediterranean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/03\/16-november-8862-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/mediterranean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/03\/16-november-8862-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/mediterranean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/03\/16-november-8862-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>GWP-Med is currently implementing the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/assets\/legacy\/globalassets\/global\/about-gwp\/gwp-strategy-2026-2030-summary-web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2026-2030 Strategy<\/a>&nbsp;&#8220;<em>Mobilising for a Water Secure World&#8221;.<\/em>&nbsp;In this frame, a number of Programmes are currently carried out in the Mediterranean region, under the following Thematic Areas:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transboundary Water Resources Management:<em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/drincorda.iwlearn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>GEF Drin Project<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;&#8220;Enabling Transboundary Cooperation and Integrated Water Resources Management in the extended Drin River Basin&#8221; promoted&nbsp;joint management of the shared water resources of the transboundary Drin River Basin, including coordination mechanisms among the various sub-basin joint commissions and committees.&nbsp;The project was implemented by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Nations Development Program&nbsp;<\/a>(UNDP) and executed by the Global Water Partnership (GWP), through GWP-Med.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unece.org\/environment-policy\/water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNECE&nbsp;<\/a>was&nbsp;a partner to this process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>GEF DRIN II Project<\/strong> \u201cImplementing the Strategic Action Programme (SAP) of the Drin Basin to Strengthen Transboundary Cooperation and Enable Integrated Natural Resources Management\u201d aims to advance integrated natural resources management and sustainable development in the Drin River Basin and its coastal and marine areas by supporting the implementation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/assets\/legacy\/globalassets\/global\/gwp-med-files\/list-of-programmes\/gef-drin-project\/drin-docs\/drin-sap.pdf\">Strategic Action Program<\/a> (SAP) agreed upon by the Riparians. The project is funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegef.org\/\">GEF<\/a> and implemented by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/\">UNDP<\/a> in the four project beneficiary areas in partnership with relevant line ministries, Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/unece.org\/\">UNECE<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UNDP\/Adaptation Fund funded Integrated Climate Resilient Transboundary Flood Risk Management in the Drin River Basin in the Western Balkans Project<\/strong> (2019-2024): Implemented by UNDP and the Adaptation Fund and executed by GWP-Med, the Project developed the first integrated Flood Risk Management Strategy and Road Map for the Drin Riparian countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Climate &amp; Water Investments:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Montenegro GCF Water Readiness Project<\/strong> \u201cBuilding Technical and Institutional Capacity in the Water Sector in Montenegro to Facilitate Inclusive Climate Resilience Initiative\u201d, implemented by the <a href=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/\">Global Water Partnership Organisation<\/a> (GWPO) and GWP-Mediterranean with funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenclimate.fund\/\">Green Climate Fund<\/a> will develop Montenegro\u2019s first Climate-Resilient Water Investment Plan, develop screening tools for public and private sector investments, and support the preparation of at least one GCF concept note for water-related adaptation financing. Read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/News-List-Page\/2025\/montenegro-launches-gcf-water-readiness-project-to-catalyze-transformative-climate-resilient-investment\/\">more<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Horizon Europe funded&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/spongeworks.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SpongeWorks&nbsp;<\/a>project, implements Nature-based Solutions on a landscape scale in 3 pilots in Europe: in the Pinios (GR), L\u00e8ze (FR) and Vecht (NL\/DE) river basins. A Consortium of 28 partners and 23 Knowledge partners will strive to implement 19 Nature-based Solutions&nbsp;aiming to enhance water retention and management while contributing to climate resilience and ecosystem health.&nbsp;GWP-Med leads the Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation Work Package.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ACCISI-GEM project:&nbsp;<\/strong>The project A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/Programmes-per-theme\/Climate-Change-Adaptation\/adapting-to-climate-change-impact_ghar-el-melh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>dapting to Climate Change Impacts through Smart Irrigation in Ghar El Melh wetland area (ACCISI-GEM<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em>&nbsp;aimed at enhancing water, energy and good security in the Ghar El Melh wetland area in North Tunisia and create the enabling environment and financial incentives for upscaling at national level within and beyond the country. Implemented in the Governorate of Bizerte, by the Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean together with local and national authorities, the project was financially supported by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/foreign.gov.mt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Malta&nbsp;<\/em><\/a>and&nbsp; the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/Programmes-per-theme\/Water-Food-Energy-Nexus\/the-medprogramme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GEF UNEP\/MAP MedProgramme<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PRIMA Acquaount:<\/strong>&nbsp;The PRIMA&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acquaount.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ACQUAOUNT<\/a>&nbsp;project aims to improve Integrated Water Resource Management and sustainable irrigation through the deployment of innovative tools, smart water services and solutions, for public and private use, contributing to climate resilience, with 4 pilots in Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia and Sardinia, Italy. GWP-Med is leading the Work Packages on Stakeholder Engagement and Policy &amp; Governance Analysis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Global Water Leadership Programme:&nbsp;<\/strong>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/Programmes-per-theme\/global-water-leadership-programme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Water Leadership Programme<\/a>&nbsp;brought&nbsp;together key stakeholders and decision makers from two water management pillars&nbsp;\u2013 water resources and water and sanitation \u2013 to develop holistic, integrated policies and plans to enhance national water and climate&nbsp;resilience.&nbsp;&nbsp;GWP-Med was leading activities in Palestine. UNICEF was a strategic partner.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nexuslabs-prima.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PRIMA NexusLab<\/a>s project is implemented by&nbsp;14 partners from 6 Mediterranean countries. In&nbsp;9 Living Labs in&nbsp;Morocco, Jordan, Turkey, Greece, Italy, and Spain the project&nbsp;will help bridge the gap between knowledge and practice in&nbsp;Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus&nbsp;implementation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rexus Horizon 2020 Project<\/strong>:&nbsp;&nbsp;The Horizon 2020&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rexusproject.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REXUS Projec<\/a>t developed and validated knowledge and tools to facilitate the transition from WEFE NEXUS theory to practice, taking into account climate impacts. It was applied in 5 pilots areas accross Europe and Latin America. GWP-Med lead the Communication and Dissemination Work Package in a Consortium of 17 partners. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PRIMA WEFE4MED:&nbsp;<\/strong>The WEFE4MED project, funded by the PRIMA Foundation is developing the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wefe4med.eu\/wefe\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PRIMA WEFE Nexus Mediterranean Community of Practice<\/a>, bringing together scientists and stakeholders to ensure that Nexus solutions emerging from R&amp;I activities can be applied broadly and impact the future WEFE decision-making. The Mediterranean WEFE will be built around concrete demonstration sites, showcasing positive experiences from different places in the Mediterranean region. GWP-Med is part of the Consortium implementing the project. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Matchmaker II project:&nbsp;<\/strong>The programme Matchmaker 2 provided Jordan and Palestine with tangible and scalable Nature-based Solutions in order to improve water management and build resilience to climate change, through the application of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus approach. The project was funded by Sweden and UfM, and implemented by GWP-Med.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/News-List-Page\/20232\/Matchmaker-II-Inaguration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GWP-Med is one of the executing partners of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/Programmes-per-theme\/Water-Food-Energy-Nexus\/the-medprogramme\/\"><strong>GEF UNEP\/MAP MedProgramme<\/strong><\/a> (2019-2025) that aims&nbsp;to operationalize priority actions to reduce major transboundary environmental &nbsp;stresses in Mediterranean coastal areas, while strengthening climate resilience and water security and improving the health and livelihoods of coastal populations. Under Child Project 2.1 \u201cMediterranean Coastal Zone: Water Security, Climate Resilience and Habitat Protection\u201d, GWP-Med is contributing to the preparation of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Strategy for Lebanon and the ICZM Plan-Schema Regional du Littoral for the Moroccan Region of Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoce\u00efma (TTA) &#8211; activities led by PAP\/RAC &#8211; through its efforts to integrate the results of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus approach in the above processes and resulting documents. While operating in synergy with Child Project 2.1, GWP-Med as executing partner of Child Project 2.2 \u201cMediterranean Coastal Zones: Managing the Water-Energy-Food and Ecosystems Nexus&#8221; aims at balancing&nbsp;competing water uses in priority coastal areas through water, food, energy and ecosystems integrated governance, to enhance environmental security and sharing of benefits.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Contributing to Gender Equality:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Empowering Women Water Leadership\u00a0in the MENA region<\/strong>: An initiative by GWP-Med and the Geneva Water Hub that aims at supporting female water experts from the MENA region in their personal development and their professional careers.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/News-List-Page\/2022\/90-minutes-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read More<\/a> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/aipwater.org\/wacdep-g\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>AIP WACDEP-G (2023-2025)<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong>\u00a0The Project aimed at transforming gender inequalities at scale by promoting gender-transformative planning, decision-making and institutional development for climate resilient water investments in Africa. It was implemented by Africa Governments, Africa Union Development Agency-NEPAD and the Africa Ministers\u2019 Council on Water (AMCOW), Regional Economic Communities, River Basin Organisations, Regional Water Partnerships, Country Water Partnerships, women organisations, International Water Management Institute (IWMI), UN WOMEN, Global Water Partnership and others.\u00a0In the period 2020-2022 GWP-Mediterranean implemented the programme at regional level in North Africa and at country level in Tunisia under the leadership of the national focal point, the General Directorate of Water Resources in the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture, Hydraulic Resources and Fisheries. In the second cycle of work (2023-2025) the work continued regionally in North Africa, while the country focus included Morocco and targeted continuation of work in Tunisia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technical Resources:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Zero-Drop Program<\/strong>: Launched&nbsp; in July 2022 in Folegandros, with exclusive funding from The Coca-Cola Foundation and the support of local communities and public authorities, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/zero-drop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;<em>Zero Drop<\/em>&nbsp;<\/a>water resources protection program is implementing water saving technical solutions in areas facing intense water scarcity, while raising awareness and building capacities to better manage and conserve water resources. Since then, the program has aslo reached&nbsp; &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/zero-drop\/zerodrop-mission-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cyprus<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/zero-drop\/zero-drop-heraklion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heraklion Crete<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/zero-drop\/zero-drop-schimatari\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Schimatari<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/zero-drop\/zero-drop-mornos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mornos<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alter Aqua Project<\/strong>: Funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation, with contributions by the Energy and Water Agency and GSD Marketing Ltd, the Alter Aqua project has been&nbsp;promoting the use of Non-Conventional Water Resources (NCWR) since 2011 in Malta.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/alteraqua.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Resilient Thessaly Project:&nbsp;<\/strong>This flood control project, was designed by GWP-Med with support from The Coca-Cola Foundation, in close collaboration with the Municipality of Trikala, Greece and the Municipal Water Supply and Sewage Company of Trikala (DEYAT). The project involved<em>&nbsp;<\/em>the&nbsp;installation of a rainwater drainage pipeline from the Barra area in Trikala,&nbsp;one of the most flood-prone and densely populated areas of the city. This intervention will act&nbsp;as a protective shield against possible future extreme weather events,&nbsp;providing a solution to the chronic flooding problem facing the area.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/News-List-Page\/2024\/new-flood-prevention-project-delivered-to-Trikala-Greece\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Korinthos Water Replenishment Project<\/strong>: Implemented by the&nbsp;Global Water Partnership \u2013 Mediterranean&nbsp;(GWP-Med) and funded by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/crowncork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Crown Holdings<\/a>,&nbsp; in partnership with Korinthos municipality in Greece,&nbsp; this water replenishment project significantly enhances water efficiency, ensuring resilience against water scarcity challenges exacerbated by climate change. The project focuses on reducing water waste through advanced filtration and reclamation technology. By reusing&nbsp;92% of the water previously discharged&nbsp;during filter cleaning, the upgraded plant&nbsp;saves at least 26 million liters of water annually\u2014equivalent to the average yearly consumption of&nbsp;100 households&nbsp;in Korinthos.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/News-List-Page\/2024\/new-page\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read More<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aigio Water Replenishment Project:&nbsp;<\/strong>The project focuses on minimizing the water leaks of the urban water distribution network of the Aigialeia Municipality, in collaboration with the respective Water Utility, by building on global and Mediterranean best practices and responding to national priorities and local operational plans. It is implemented by Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean, in collaboration with the Municipal Company for Water and Sewerage of Aigio Municipality, and funded by Coca Cola HBC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alter Aqua RECAP Project:<\/strong>&nbsp;Funded by The Coca Cola Foundation, GWP-Med together with Malta\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/energywateragency.gov.mt\/\"><strong>Energy and Water Agency (EWA)<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;are collaborating in advancing Malta\u2019s water resilience through&nbsp;promoting the use of recycled greywater for domestic uses.&nbsp;The project aims to gain practical experience that will help remove obstacles to&nbsp;upscaling greywater recycling and reuse,&nbsp;and inform relevant enabling policies in Malta\u2019s 4<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;River Basin Management Plan, which is currently under development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The RESWATER&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cNon-Conventional Water Resources for Resilient Urban Water Management in the Mediterranean\u201d project, is co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme. Its&nbsp;aim is to strengthen urban water resilience among Mediterranean partners by exploring small-scale, decentralized Non-Conventional Water Resource (NCWR) technologies that reduce reliance on traditional freshwater sources.&nbsp;GWP-Med is leading the establishment of Living Labs and Community of Practice.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/energywateragency.gov.mt\/reswater\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/prima-med.org\/\"><strong>Prima<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;NUSTALGIC project<\/strong>&nbsp;aims to valorise climate-resilient neglected and underutilized species (NUS), revive traditional water harvesting systems, foster fair employment and sustainable agri-food systems and create local Innovation Platforms (DRIPS) to co-develop solutions with communities. GWP-Med is leading the Work Package on Water Harvesting and Efficiency whereby we will be implementing six rainwater harvesting technologies in Tunisia, Lebanon, Morocco, Jordan and Portugal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;<strong>Water is in our Hands<\/strong>&#8220;: Starting in 2019, this project, which is implemented by GWP-Med and Reckitt&#8217;s Finish, provides concrete tools to combat water scarcity and save water at home.&nbsp;In previous years, Water is in our hands visited&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/News-List-Page\/water-is-in-our-hands\/\">Agios Efstratios<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/News-List-Page\/2021\/water-is-in-our-hands-year2\/\">Oinousses<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/News-List-Page\/2022\/water-is-in-our-hands-changing-habits-in-the-island-of-psara\/\">Psara<\/a>, small islands in the Aegean sea also facing the intense challenge of water scarcity. In 2023 the Program visited the island of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/News-List-Page\/20232\/an-island-community-mobilising-to-save-water-in-lipsi-greece\/\"
