On February 2, for the first time, World Wetlands Day will be celebrated as a United Nations International Day, this year\u2019s theme being \u2018Wetlands<\/b> Action for People and Nature\u2019,<\/b> emphasizing the need to act for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands for humans and the planet. <\/a><\/p>\n

The Ghar El Melh wetland<\/strong>, in the governorate of Bizerte in North Tunisia, was designated a Ramsar site<\/strong> in 2018, due to its high ecological importance. However, the wetland\u2019s biodiversity and ecosystem are facing a number of pressures<\/strong> having a direct impact on local livelihoods.<\/p>\n

The same year, the GEMWET project<\/strong> was launched aiming to protect the Ghar El Melh wetland and promote sustainable development in the local community. GWP-Med<\/strong> was responsible for two of its core activities: Smart Irrigation<\/strong> and Green Jobs<\/strong>, implemented with the support of WWF North Africa<\/strong> and the financial support of MAVA Foundation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
