Within this framework, GWP-Med was responsible for two activities: the training and coaching of local youth to develop their green jobs ideas and the application of an integrated natural resources management system to support local farmers with their irrigation needs.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tCbZlk0qz6I\" frameborder=\"0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" allowfullscreen=\"\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-9=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Watch the video on GEMWET project&#8217;s smart irrigation activity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLrTy0db7oKMIsJLdt7BxFH9srfCo9pam_\" target=\"_blank\">Watch all the GEMWET project videos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>GEMWET has successfully concluded, and GWP-Med is proudly presenting the results of three years of field work. Applying a holistic approach to water management, working on the ground together with experts, users, and all related stakeholders, creating synergies and providing the necessary technical support and knowledge were the key elements for impactful interventions, contributing to natural resources security and building resilient societies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/mediterranean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/04\/ghar-el-melh_resize-1.jpg\" height=\"361\" width=\"800\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ghar El Melh<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The area of Ghar El Melh, in the north of Tunisia is home to one of the country\u2019s most precious wetlands. The Ghar El Melh lagoon was designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in 2018, while the city Ghar El Melh is one of Tunisia\u2019s cultural hotspots. Tourism, farming and fishing are some of the most important economic activities. However, the area\u2019s ecological and cultural treasures are facing a number of pressures having a direct impact on local society\u2019s well-being and economic prosperity. As a result, young people often leave the area in search for economic opportunities, while farmers struggle with scarce water resources.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Smart Irrigation Activity: the application of WEFE Nexus approach that improved productivity and saved water for local farmers&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>GWP-Med\u2019s Smart Irrigation activity aimed at providing the necessary tools and technical support to local farmers in order to optimize the use of water for irrigation and achieve important financial but also environmental benefits. 6 plots were chosen whereby specialized equipment was installed consisting of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A weather station to measure the following parameters: solar radiation, air temperature, air relative humidity, wind speed and precipitation;<\/li>\n<li>24 Sensors \/ probes for measuring soil moisture and soil temperature profiles at different depths;<\/li>\n<li>12 Pulse water flowmeters and 12 solenoid valves for irrigation management<\/li>\n<li>&nbsp;An Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system that includes 15 gateways for real-time data transmission with recording of data and a data storage platform<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/mediterranean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/04\/smart-irrigation_resize-1.jpg\" height=\"427\" width=\"640\"><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the above, a GIS user-friendly online platform was created for each plot that provided an \u201dirrigation alert\u201d to each farmer based on real time data measured in each of the plots.<\/p>\n<p>In parallel, a number of capacity building activities, workshops, trainings and seminars were implemented engaging all directly involved stakeholders, associations as well as members of the local, regional and central government. As a result, farmers and local partners were trained on GIS techniques and equipment maintenance and policy makers from all levels of government participated in discussions on how to mainstream ICT in national strategies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A great win!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The combination of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus approach, together with the use of innovative technology in the plots that were selected to participate in the activity, had fascinating results: t<strong>he average results of the spring crop planting campaign showed that water volume used for irrigation was reduced by 44% while productivity increased by 66%.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A reduction in the volumes of water supplied was recorded (in m3 \/ ha) varying from 14 to 40% with an increase in yield (in T \/ ha) reaching up to approximately&nbsp;20%.&nbsp;As a result, productivity (kg \/ m3) improved up to 66%. Also the number of irrigations has been reduced to half in some cases (6 irrigations instead of 11 during the entire potato growing cycle).&nbsp;This reduces the workload of farmers and the cost of labor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Green Jobs: creating economic opportunities for young people that contribute to the conservation of Ghar El Melh\u2019s natural treasures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/mediterranean\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2026\/04\/photo-17_resize-1.jpg\" height=\"427\" width=\"640\"><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The aim of the project was to help young people materialize their green jobs idea, while at the same time promoting sustainable development and contributing to the protection of Ghar El Melh\u2019s unique biodiversity. Together with WWF-North Africa, GWP-Med organized a number of capacity building activities, including trainings and personal coaching sessions, that enabled young entrepreneurs to develop their business, financial and marketing plans and provided support on administrative procedures and funding opportunities to ultimately set up their own Green start-ups.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4Uu4l-Fvkrs\" frameborder=\"0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" allowfullscreen=\"\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-9=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Watch the video on GEMWET&#8217;s green entreneurship activity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Overall, 13 participants half of them women participated in the activities organized. As a result:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>4 participants have now launched their Green start up<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>6 participants finalised their business, financial and marketing plans <\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>1 has applied to receive a patent <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The projects launched include waste recycling, the development of organic agriculture and hydroponic farming, processing of local fisheries products and distillation of aromatic and medicinal plants.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><i>The&nbsp;<b>\u2018Conservation and Sustainable Development of Coastal Wetlands with High Ecological Value\u2019 (<\/b><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/News-List-Page\/launch-of-the-gemwet-projectnew-page\/\"><b><i>GEMWET<\/i><\/b><\/a><b><i>) Project<\/i><\/b><i>&nbsp;<\/i>aims to assist economic, socio-cultural and ecological development in the Ghar El Melh. It is a wetlands area known for its ecological and heritage richness (a Ramsar wetland and the first Arab and North Africa city to be recognised as Ramsar city), which, however, is facing a range of developmental pressures particularly under climate vulnerability and change impacts. Economic activities are mainly related to tourism, lagoon\/coastal fishing and agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>Applying principles of the Integrated Methodological Framework for<i>&nbsp;<\/i><b><i>Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)<\/i><\/b><i>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<b>Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM<\/b><\/i>), the project aims at strengthening governance and local capacities for ecosystems\u2019 monitoring and management; promoting the sustainable use of water resources; contribute fighting urban and industrial pollution; assist strengthening traditional farming practices; promoting responsible tourism; supporting the Ghar El Melh Coastal Development Programme; and engaging youth. With the support of the MAVA Foundation, the GEMWET Project is implemented under the lead of WWF North Africa and in partnership with BirdLife Europe, Association &#8220;Birds Friends&#8221;, GWP-Med, UN Environment \/ Regional Activity Center of the Priority Actions Program (PAP\/RAC), National Agronomic Institute of Tunis, Tour du Valat and IUCN.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;application de l&#8217;approche du Nexus eau-\u00e9nergie-alimentation-\u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes aux parcelles agricoles et le d\u00e9veloppement d&#8217;id\u00e9es d&#8217;entreprises vertes de jeunes locaux de Ghar El Melh ont conduit \u00e0 des r\u00e9sultats impressionnants : l&#8217;utilisation de l&#8217;eau pour l&#8217;irrigation a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9duite de 44%, la productivit\u00e9 des cultures a augment\u00e9 de 66%, et 4 nouvelles startups vertes ont lanc\u00e9 leurs services avec succ\u00e8s.<\/p>\n<p>Le projet GEMWET a \u00e9t\u00e9 lanc\u00e9 en 2018, avec pour objectif global de prot\u00e9ger les tr\u00e9sors naturels de Ghar El Melh, de promouvoir le d\u00e9veloppement durable et de contribuer \u00e0 la prosp\u00e9rit\u00e9 de la communaut\u00e9 locale. Dans ce cadre, GWP-Med \u00e9tait responsable de deux activit\u00e9s : la formation et l&#8217;accompagnement des jeunes locaux pour d\u00e9velopper leurs id\u00e9es d&#8217;emplois verts ainsi que l&#8217;application d&#8217;un syst\u00e8me de gestion int\u00e9gr\u00e9e des ressources naturelles pour soutenir les agriculteurs locaux dans leurs besoins d&#8217;irrigation.<\/p>\n<p>Le projet GEMWET s&#8217;est achev\u00e9 avec succ\u00e8s et GWP-Med est fier de pr\u00e9senter les r\u00e9sultats de trois ann\u00e9es de travail sur le terrain. L&#8217;application d&#8217;une approche holistique de la gestion de l&#8217;eau, le travail sur le terrain avec des experts, des utilisateurs et toutes les parties prenantes concern\u00e9es, la cr\u00e9ation de synergies et la fourniture du soutien technique et des connaissances n\u00e9cessaires ont \u00e9t\u00e9 les \u00e9l\u00e9ments cl\u00e9s d&#8217;interventions efficaces, contribuant \u00e0 la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des ressources naturelles et \u00e0 la construction de soci\u00e9t\u00e9s r\u00e9silientes.<\/p>\n<p><b>Ghar El Melh<\/b><\/p>\n<p>La r\u00e9gion de Ghar El Melh, dans le nord de la Tunisie, abrite l&#8217;une des zones humides les plus pr\u00e9cieuses du pays. La lagune de Ghar El Melh a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9sign\u00e9e comme zone humide d&#8217;importance internationale dans le cadre de la Convention de Ramsar en 2018, tandis que la ville de Ghar El Melh est l&#8217;un des principaux lieux culturels de la Tunisie. Le tourisme, l&#8217;agriculture et la p\u00eache sont quelques-unes des activit\u00e9s \u00e9conomiques les plus importantes. Cependant, les tr\u00e9sors \u00e9cologiques et culturels de la r\u00e9gion sont soumis \u00e0 un certain nombre de pressions qui ont un impact direct sur le bien-\u00eatre et la prosp\u00e9rit\u00e9 \u00e9conomique de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 locale. En cons\u00e9quence, les jeunes quittent souvent la r\u00e9gion \u00e0 la recherche d&#8217;opportunit\u00e9s \u00e9conomiques, tandis que les agriculteurs luttent contre la rar\u00e9faction des ressources en eau.<\/p>\n<p><b>Activit\u00e9 d\u2019Irrigation Intelligente : l&#8217;application de l&#8217;approche WEFE Nexus qui a permis d&#8217;am\u00e9liorer la productivit\u00e9 et d&#8217;\u00e9conomiser de l&#8217;eau pour les agriculteurs locaux<\/b><\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;activit\u00e9 Smart Irrigation du GWP-Med visait \u00e0 fournir les outils et le soutien technique n\u00e9cessaires aux agriculteurs locaux afin d&#8217;optimiser l&#8217;utilisation de l&#8217;eau pour l&#8217;irrigation et d&#8217;atteindre d&#8217;importants b\u00e9n\u00e9fices financiers mais aussi environnementaux. Six parcelles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 choisies pour l&#8217;installation d&#8217;\u00e9quipements sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9s comprenant :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Une station m\u00e9t\u00e9orologique pour mesurer les param\u00e8tres suivants : rayonnement solaire, temp\u00e9rature de l&#8217;air, humidit\u00e9 relative de l&#8217;air, vitesse du vent et pr\u00e9cipitations ;<\/li>\n<li>24 capteurs\/sondes pour mesurer les profils d&#8217;humidit\u00e9 et de temp\u00e9rature du sol \u00e0 diff\u00e9rentes profondeurs ;<\/li>\n<li>12 d\u00e9bitm\u00e8tres \u00e0 impulsions et 12 \u00e9lectrovannes pour la gestion de l&#8217;irrigation.<\/li>\n<li>Un syst\u00e8me de technologie de l&#8217;information et de la communication (TIC) qui comprend 15 passerelles pour la transmission de donn\u00e9es en temps r\u00e9el avec enregistrement des donn\u00e9es et une plate-forme de stockage des donn\u00e9es.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>En plus de ce qui pr\u00e9c\u00e8de, une plateforme en ligne conviviale bas\u00e9e sur un SIG a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9e pour chaque parcelle qui fournit une \u00ab alerte d&#8217;irrigation \u00bb \u00e0 chaque agriculteur sur la base des donn\u00e9es en temps r\u00e9el mesur\u00e9es dans chacune des parcelles.<\/p>\n<p>Parall\u00e8lement, un certain nombre d&#8217;activit\u00e9s de renforcement des capacit\u00e9s, d&#8217;ateliers, de formations et de s\u00e9minaires ont \u00e9t\u00e9 mis en \u0153uvre, impliquant toutes les parties prenantes directement concern\u00e9es, les associations ainsi que les membres du gouvernement local, r\u00e9gional et central. En cons\u00e9quence, les agriculteurs et les partenaires locaux ont \u00e9t\u00e9 form\u00e9s aux techniques SIG et \u00e0 la maintenance des \u00e9quipements, et les d\u00e9cideurs politiques de tous les niveaux de gouvernement ont particip\u00e9 \u00e0 des discussi<i>ons sur la mani\u00e8re d&#8217;int\u00e9grer les TIC dans les strat\u00e9gies nationales.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Une grande victoire !<\/b><\/p>\n<p>La combinaison de l&#8217;approche Nexus eau-\u00e9nergie-alimentation-\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me et de l&#8217;utilisation de technologies innovantes dans les parcelles s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9es pour participer \u00e0 l&#8217;activit\u00e9 a donn\u00e9 des r\u00e9sultats fascinants: <b>les r\u00e9sultats moyens de la campagne de plantation des cultures de printemps ont montr\u00e9 que le volume d&#8217;eau utilis\u00e9 pour l&#8217;irrigation a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9duit de 44 %, tandis que la productivit\u00e9 a augment\u00e9 de 66 %.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Une r\u00e9duction des volumes d&#8217;eau fournis a \u00e9t\u00e9 enregistr\u00e9e (en m3 \/ ha) variant de 14 \u00e0 40% avec une augmentation du rendement (en T \/ ha) atteignant jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 environ 20%. Cela permet de r\u00e9duire la charge de travail des agriculteurs et le co\u00fbt de la main-d&#8217;\u0153uvre.<\/p>\n<p><b>Emplois verts : cr\u00e9er des opportunit\u00e9s \u00e9conomiques pour les jeunes qui contribuent \u00e0 la conservation des tr\u00e9sors naturels de Ghar El Melh<\/b><\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;objectif du projet \u00e9tait d&#8217;aider les jeunes \u00e0 concr\u00e9tiser leur id\u00e9e d&#8217;emplois verts, tout en promouvant le d\u00e9veloppement durable et en contribuant \u00e0 la protection de la biodiversit\u00e9 unique de Ghar El Melh. En collaboration avec le WWF-Afrique du Nord, GWP-Med a organis\u00e9 un certain nombre d&#8217;activit\u00e9s de renforcement des capacit\u00e9s, y compris des formations et des s\u00e9ances de coaching personnel, qui ont permis aux jeunes entrepreneurs de d\u00e9velopper leurs plans d&#8217;affaires, financiers et de marketing et de fournir un soutien sur les proc\u00e9dures administratives et les opportunit\u00e9s de financement pour finalement mettre en place leurs propres start-ups vertes.<\/p>\n<p>Au total, 13 participants, dont la moiti\u00e9 \u00e9taient des femmes, ont particip\u00e9 aux activit\u00e9s organis\u00e9es. En cons\u00e9quence&nbsp;:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 4 participants ont maintenant lanc\u00e9 leur start-up verte<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 6 participants ont finalis\u00e9 leur plan d&#8217;affaires, financier et de marketing<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; 1 participant a d\u00e9pos\u00e9 une demande de brevet.<\/p>\n<p>Les projets lanc\u00e9s incluent le recyclage des d\u00e9chets, le d\u00e9veloppement de l&#8217;agriculture biologique et de la culture hydroponique, la transformation des produits de la p\u00eache locale et la distillation de plantes aromatiques et m\u00e9dicinales.<\/p>\n<p>Le projet \u00ab Conservation et d\u00e9veloppement durable des zones humides c\u00f4ti\u00e8res \u00e0 haute valeur \u00e9cologique \u00bb (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwp.org\/en\/GWP-Mediterranean\/WE-ACT\/News-List-Page\/launch-of-the-gemwet-projectnew-page\/\">GEMWET<\/a>) vise \u00e0 soutenir le d\u00e9veloppement \u00e9conomique, socioculturel et \u00e9cologique du Ghar El Melh. Il s&#8217;agit d&#8217;une zone humide connue pour sa richesse \u00e9cologique et patrimoniale (une zone humide Ramsar et la premi\u00e8re ville arabe et d&#8217;Afrique du Nord \u00e0 \u00eatre reconnue comme ville Ramsar), qui est cependant confront\u00e9e \u00e0 une s\u00e9rie de pressions li\u00e9es au d\u00e9veloppement, en particulier \u00e0 la vuln\u00e9rabilit\u00e9 climatique et aux impacts du changement. Les activit\u00e9s \u00e9conomiques sont principalement li\u00e9es au tourisme, \u00e0 la p\u00eache lagunaire\/c\u00f4ti\u00e8re et \u00e0 l&#8217;agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>En appliquant les principes du cadre m\u00e9thodologique int\u00e9gr\u00e9 pour la gestion int\u00e9gr\u00e9e des ressources en eau (GIRE) et la gestion int\u00e9gr\u00e9e des zones c\u00f4ti\u00e8res (GIZC), le projet vise \u00e0 renforcer la gouvernance et les capacit\u00e9s locales pour le suivi et la gestion des \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes, \u00e0 promouvoir l&#8217;utilisation durable des ressources en eau, \u00e0 contribuer \u00e0 la lutte contre la pollution urbaine et industrielle, \u00e0 aider au renforcement des pratiques agricoles traditionnelles, \u00e0 promouvoir un tourisme responsable, \u00e0 soutenir le programme de d\u00e9veloppement c\u00f4tier de Ghar El Melh et \u00e0 impliquer les jeunes. Avec le soutien de la Fondation MAVA, le projet GEMWET est mis en \u0153uvre sous la direction du WWF Afrique du Nord et en partenariat avec BirdLife Europe, l&#8217;Association \u00ab Birds Friends
