The Stockholm World Water Week 2016 was held from 28 August to 2 September under the overarching theme of \u2018Water for Sustainable Growth\u2019. Among the Week\u2019s more than 140 events covering a range of subjects, the \u201cMENA Focus\u201d<\/strong> took place on 30 and 31 August consisting of 4 targeted 90-minute sessions ensuring that the region\u2019s priorities are duly reflected in the programme, aligned with the Week\u2019s annual theme.<\/p>\n

Apart from coordinating the overall \u201cMENA Focus\u201d<\/strong>, GWP-Med<\/strong> also co-convened the first two sessions, along with the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources <\/strong>(Bundesanstalt f\u00fcr Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe \u2013 BGR) for the first one and the United Nations Development Programme \u2013 Stockholm International Water Institute Water Governance Facility <\/strong>(UNDP-SIWI WGF) for the second one. The other two \u201cMENA Focus\u201d sessions were led by GWP-Med partners working actively in the region: the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia<\/strong> (UN ESCWA), the Arab Countries Water Utilities Association <\/strong>(ACWUA), the League of Arab States<\/strong> (LAS) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency<\/strong> (Sida) in the case of the 3rd session, and the Regional Environmental Center <\/strong>(REC) in the case of the 4th session.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Stockholm World Water Week successfully launched the inclusion of a set of events dedicated to the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) Region in the Week\u2019s official programme, alongside the Regional Days for Africa, Asia and Latin America. The Global Water Partnership \u2013 Mediterranean (GWP-Med) had been selected and serves as the overall coordinator for these \u201cMENA Focus\u201d events. The Approach of the 1st \"MENA Focus\"<\/h1>\n <\/div>\n

Bringing together key stakeholders with a gender-balanced approach, including policy makers, government officials, academia, civil society, private sector, regional organisations, donors, media and youth representatives, the \u201cMENA Focus\u201d<\/strong> managed to enhance experience and knowledge sharing, as well as promote regional priority issues in the global water agenda.<\/p>\n

Aiming for a participatory mode, the sessions had an emphasis on facilitated open discussions, including limited presentations and panel discussions with experts from the region. Participants reflected upon, discussed, shared their insights and explored solutions aligned with key regional initiatives and political processes, and tailor-made to the region\u2019s context.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/article><\/div>

The Legacy of the 1st \"MENA Focus\"<\/h1>\n <\/div>\n

Besides attributing a special focus on the region\u2019s priorities, challenges and opportunities on the theme of \u2018Water for Sustainable Growth\u2019, the \u201cMENA Focus\u201d<\/strong> events provided a strong networking opportunity among organisations and institutions actively working towards a water secure Middle East and North Africa.<\/p>\n

The wealth of shared experiences and lessons learnt, offer a solid replication potential of good practices and synergetic opportunities within and beyond the MENA region.<\/p>\n

The institutionalization of the \u201cMENA Focus\u201d<\/strong> within the World Water Week\u2019s official Programme, and further to the visibility and outreach impact, it enhances the facilitation of an exchange forum on national and regional water-related developments on an annual basis.<\/p>\n

The 2017 \"MENA Focus\"<\/strong> is planned to continue and reinforce the exchanges and contribute to more tangible steps towards sustainable growth in the region.   <\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/article><\/div>
