Participants were informed on the WGI\u2019s Strategy and Activities that were updated following the Satisfaction Survey<\/a>[2]<\/a> and the Strategic Paper<\/a>[3]<\/a> launched in May 2015, as well as on the establishment of two Working Groups, on Water Governance Best Practices and on Water Governance Indicators. The two Working Groups were the focus of the meeting second day\u2019s two breakout sessions, with each of them involving brainstorming in 6 parallel roundtables.<\/p>\n

Moreover, participants were presented with two recent United Nations processes that could raise the profile of water governance in the Global Agenda: the Habitat III process regarding sustainable development in cities, towns and other human settlements – also known as the New Urban Agenda – and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change – especially the Paris Pact on Water Initiative already signed by 94 countries and 348 organizations.<\/p>\n

Participants also discussed the implementation of water-related goals in the 2030 Agenda. The OECD\u2019s Action Plan on the SDGs<\/a> acknowledged in the resolutions of the recent OECD Ministerial Council (Paris, 1-2 June 2016)<\/a> was presented. There was also a presentation on the joint UN – World Bank High-Level Panel on Water<\/a> launched in January 2016, aiming to more effective action towards an accelerated implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 and its related targets.<\/p>\n

Finally, participants discussed and reviewed OECD\u2019s draft report \u201cApplying the OECD Principles on Water Governance to the Case of Floods\u201d and were also briefed on recent and forthcoming water governance-related events, research, projects and publications.<\/p>\n

In this framework, GWP-Med participated in the 7th meeting of the WGI held on 23-24 June 2016, in The Hague, the Netherlands. Background Information on the 6th Water Governance Initiative Meeting<\/h1>\n <\/div>\n

During the last 6th<\/sup> meeting<\/a>, participants peer-reviewed analytical work on Water Governance in Cities conducted by the OECD and shared experiences and knowledge on latest water governance research and developments. GWP-Med shared a new report on \u2019Water Governance in Palestine: Sector Reform to include Private Sector Participation\u2019, prepared jointly by GWP-Med and the Palestinian Water Authority to support water reform in the country, within the framework of the Union for the Mediterranean labelled project \u2018Governance & Financing for the Mediterranean Water Sector\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Breakout sessions discussed the expectations and needs to follow-up on the outcomes of the initiatives work that include the Principles on Water Governance developed in the framework of the initiative and endorsed by the OECD members, with emphasis to be given in terms of scaling-up good practices and lessons learnt. GWP-Med, representing GWP, referred to the SDG Readiness Facility Initiative -currently under preparation by GWP together with its regions- that can support the implementation of the principles within the framework of the SDGs. The meeting also gave the members the opportunity to reflect on the ways forward of the initiative though brainstorming carried out in smaller groups, where participants supported the development of a best practice database.<\/p>\n

Hands-on experience was provided in a series of practical exercises on water governance to dig deeper into the role of various key stakeholders through simulation and modeling games that were pilot-tested to foster lively exchanges on real-life situations to manage water-related trade-offs at catchment level.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/article><\/div>
