{"id":2160,"date":"2025-09-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-07T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/southeast-asia\/news\/water-security-for-indonesia-from-scarcity-to-solutions\/"},"modified":"2026-05-08T15:56:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T14:56:34","slug":"water-security-for-indonesia-from-scarcity-to-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gwpo-gwp.org\/southeast-asia\/news\/water-security-for-indonesia-from-scarcity-to-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Water Security for Indonesia: From Scarcity to Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With nearly 100 participants from Southeast Asia, the Netherlands, Australia, and beyond, the online session brought together government officials, private sector leaders, development partners, and civil society representatives to <b>exchange knowledge and share practical pathways for strengthening Indonesia\u2019s urban water resilience<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The webinar <b>opened with a keynote<\/b> address by <b>Dr. Mohammad Irfan Saleh, Director of Water Resources at the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN\/Bappenas) Republic of Indonesia<\/b>, who outlined <b>national strategies for building water-sensitive and climate-resilient cities<\/b>. He highlighted the <b>government\u2019s ongoing efforts to integrate flood management, water reuse, and green infrastructure into Indonesia\u2019s urban planning agenda.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, <b>Mr. Agus Umar Yasin, Chairman of IdWA<\/b>, emphasized <b>the urgency of moving beyond fragmented, supply-driven water management<\/b>. He called for <b>integrated and collaborative approaches as essential to ensuring both water security and climate resilience in Indonesian cities.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>During the discussion session, <b>Dr. Subekti, Executive Director of the Indonesian Water Supply Association (PERPAMSI)<\/b>, presented <b>innovations in efficient water supply and sanitation services<\/b>. Regional perspectives followed, with <b>Dato\u2019 Hanapi Mohamad Noor, Chairman of GWP Malaysia, sharing practical cases of nature-based solutions, including rainwater harvesting and river restoration.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>From the private sector, <b>Mr. Azwar Satrya Muhammad, Water Resources, Science &amp; Process Technology Director at Danone-AQUA<\/b>, showcased <b>water-positive initiatives at catchment levels, demonstrating how circular water systems can be scaled to benefit both industry and local communities.<\/b> <b>Mr. Amik Purdinata, Chairman of Brantas Berdaya<\/b>, concluded the panel by presenting <b>community-driven approaches that integrate water, food, and energy systems through green and circular practices<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>A moderated <b>discussion, led by Mr. Nova Widyanto, Secretary General of IdWA<\/b>, <b>engaged participants on themes of policy alignment, cross-sector partnerships, and community engagement as foundations for resilient urban water systems.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Closing the event, <b>Dr. Raymond Valiant, Regional Coordinator of GWP-SEA<\/b>, <b>stressed<\/b> the <b>importance of collective action<\/b>: <i>\u201cWater resilience is not the responsibility of one sector alone. It requires governments, businesses, and communities working together to deliver sustainable solutions.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The webinar concluded with a strong call for collaboration and knowledge sharing in the lead-up to Water Indonesia 2025, scheduled for 10\u201313 September, where stakeholders will continue to advance pathways toward sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient urban
