UNCCD Community of Practice Webinar | Beyond Drought Crisis: Building Proactive Risk Management in the Northern Mediterranean

The Northern Mediterranean region is experiencing increasingly frequent and prolonged droughts due to climate change and growing human pressures on water resources. Changing precipitation patterns and rising temperatures are accelerating the transition from meteorological drought to agricultural and hydrological drought, placing significant stress on water resources, agriculture, ecosystems and energy systems. Because drought develops slowly and its impacts are often difficult to detect early, responses are frequently delayed and remain reactive.

This webinar will bring together experts, policymakers and practitioners from Northern Mediterranean countries to strengthen regional dialogue on proactive drought risk management. It will focus on improving preparedness through enhanced monitoring and early warning systems, effective risk reduction measures, and adaptation strategies.

Participants will exchange experiences on how drought conditions are monitored, how early warning information is communicated, and what practical measures can reduce drought impacts across key sectors such as water management, agriculture, ecosystems and energy. The discussion will also highlight national drought management plans, policy frameworks and coordination mechanisms that support preparedness and resilience.

By sharing practical tools, experiences and good practices, the webinar aims to support the transition from reactive, crisis-driven responses to proactive drought risk management across the Northern Mediterranean region.
