A Landmark Moment for GWPO:Unanimous Approval Ushers in a New Era

GWPO Defining Milestone

On 25 June 2025, in a defining milestone for the Global Water Partnership Organisation (GWPO), the Sponsoring Partners unanimously approved historic decisions to guide the next phase of GWPO’s transformation.

The Sponsoring Partners—representing the founding States and international organisations of Sweden, Argentina, Chile, Hungary, Jordan, Netherlands, Pakistan, and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)—approved the following:

  • Amendments to GWP’s founding GWP & GWPO Statutes: Authorising the relocation of the GWPO Headquarters from Sweden to a new Host Country in the Global South. This bold move repositions GWPO as a globally rooted, Southern-anchored intergovernmental organisation. The Amended Statutes take effect on 22 May 2026.
  • The GWP Strategy 2026–2030: Redefining GWP’s role as a global driver of bankable, climate-resilient water solutions. The Strategy will be launched during World Water Week in Stockholm in August 2025.

These decisions follow a powerful demonstration of unity at the GWP Partners Network Meeting (General Assembly) on 22 May 2025, where over 150 Partners from 85+ countries voted overwhelmingly in favor of the changes.

Additional Sponsoring Partner Approvals:

Together, these milestones mark a watershed moment in GWP’s evolution as it transitions into the leading intergovernmental organisation on water with a regionally empowered global network of partners:

  • Anchored in the Global South
  • Driven by GWP Regional Water Partnerships and Technical Hubs in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and Latin America & the Caribbean
  • Aligned with global ambitions for resilience, growth, and climate equity

“The transformation is no longer aspirational. It’s institutional.”— Alex Simalabwi, CEO of GWPO and Executive Secretary of GWP
