Who We Are
Global Water Partnership – West Africa (GWP-WA) began in 2002 as a platform to promote Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) across the region. In its early years, it focused on advocacy, helping countries adopt national water policies and building capacity through dialogue and training.
Over time, its role expanded. By the 2010s, GWP-WA linked water governance to food security and development, aligning with global agendas like the MDGs and SDGs. As climate change impacts grew, it shifted toward resilience and adaptation, strengthening cooperation with river basin organizations to manage shared resources.
Today, GWP-WA is a strategic regional coordinator, mobilizing stakeholders, financing, and knowledge for climate-resilient water governance. It works closely with ECOWAS, WAEMU, CILSS, RBOs and other regional institutions, the African Union, and partners to champion water security, disaster risk reduction, and inclusive development across West Africa.
