About Global Water Partnership-West Africa

In the heart of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, a regional hub quietly pulses with determination. It is the home of GWP West Africa, a coalition of voices united by one mission: to safeguard water, the lifeblood of communities across the region.

West Africa is a land of contrasts—rivers that swell with floods, lands that parch under relentless drought, and communities that depend on water for survival, culture, and growth. Against this backdrop, GWP West Africa emerges not as a single institution, but as a network of partners: governments, civil society, researchers, and youth groups, all bound by the belief that water must be managed wisely, equitably, and sustainably.

The narrative of GWP-WA is one of connection and resilience. It translates global principles of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) into local realities. It listens to farmers in Burkina Faso, youth activists in Benin, and women leaders in Togo, weaving their experiences into strategies that strengthen governance and empower communities.

Projects like the Mekrou initiative in the Niger basin show how cross-border cooperation can turn rivers into bridges of solidarity rather than lines of division. Youth-led programs such as TonFuturTonClimat remind the world that climate resilience is not only technical—it is generational, cultural, and deeply human.

At its core, GWP West Africa is a story of stewardship. It is about building institutions that can withstand climate shocks, about giving marginalized voices a seat at the table, and about ensuring that water—so often a source of conflict—becomes a source of peace and prosperity.
And so, the narrative continues: a regional partnership, rooted in Africa, connected to the world, carrying forward the vision that water is not just a resource, but a right, a responsibility, and a path to resilience.
