Climate Resilience
Climate resilience is at the heart of GWP West Africa’s mandate. Through initiatives such as the operationalization of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in transboundary basins, GWP-WA works with governments, regional institutions, and local stakeholders to strengthen adaptive capacity and reduce vulnerability to climate change. The partnership supports readiness assessments, mobilizes climate finance, and fosters multi-country collaboration under frameworks like the African Union’s Africa Adaptation Initiative. By combining technical expertise, stakeholder engagement, and evidence-based planning, GWP-WA helps countries in the region build resilience to floods, droughts, and other climate-related risks, while ensuring water security and sustainable development.

Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)
GWP-WA promotes IWRM as the cornerstone of sustainable water governance in West Africa. By supporting national strategies, transboundary basin organizations, and local initiatives, the partnership ensures that water resources are managed holistically across sectors and borders. Through manuals of best practices, training, and policy dialogue, GWP-WA helps governments and stakeholders embed IWRM principles into planning and decision-making.

Water Security and Investment Planning
GWP-WA works to ensure that water is available, accessible, and sustainably managed for people, ecosystems, and economies. It supports governments in developing investment plans that align with national development priorities and regional frameworks. By linking water security to economic growth and poverty reduction, GWP-WA positions water as a driver of sustainable development.

Partnerships and Capacity Building
At the heart of GWP-WA’s model is its network of Country Water Partnerships (CWPs). These platforms bring together governments, civil society, academia, and the private sector to foster dialogue and joint action. GWP-WA strengthens institutional capacities, builds alliances, and promotes knowledge sharing, ensuring that stakeholders at all levels can contribute effectively to water governance.

Knowledge and Technical Support
GWP-WA provides evidence-based guidance through its Technical Committee of Experts and regional studies. It develops tools, manuals, and research outputs that inform policy and practice. By bridging science and decision-making, GWP-WA ensures that strategies are grounded in reliable data and adapted to the realities of West Africa.
