Recognizing the vulnerability of West Africa to floods, droughts, and climate variability, GWP-WA places climate resilience at the center of its agenda. It mobilizes climate finance, strengthens adaptive capacity, and supports readiness assessments for national adaptation plans. By fostering collaboration among countries and institutions, GWP-WA helps build resilience to climate risks while safeguarding water security and livelihoods.

Climate Resilience Programmes and Projects
Water, Climate and Development Programme (WACDEP)
A flagship initiative that integrates water security into climate adaptation and development planning. It supports countries in mainstreaming climate resilience into national policies, strategies, and investment plans.
YourFutureYourClimate (TFTC = TonFuturTonClimat)
A youth-led programme that empowers young people to design and implement climate adaptation projects. It focuses on practical, community-based solutions such as reforestation, water harvesting, and sustainable agriculture
Integrated Drought Management Programme West Africa (IDMP – WA)
Focused on teaching communities how to adapt to drought impacts. It promotes climate-smart agriculture and water-saving techniques, helping farmers sustain livelihoods in increasingly arid conditions.
Flood Risk Mapping and Early Warning (AFCIA Mali)
Innovative projects such as real-time flood risk mapping and installation of hydrometric stations strengthen early warning systems, reducing vulnerability to floods and protecting communities.
Regional Initiative for Water and Environment – Mono River Basin (RIWE)
RIWE is an initiative in the Mono River Basin (shared by Togo and Benin), funded by the Global Environment Fund (GEF) that addresses the dual challenges of climate variability and environmental degradation. It promotes integrated water and ecosystem management, supports community-based adaptation, and restores critical ecosystems such as wetlands. RIWE emphasizes regional cooperation, helping countries jointly manage shared resources while building resilience to climate shocks and safeguarding biodiversity. The partners include IUCN, OSS, MBA.
Reversing Water and Ecosystem Degradation in the Volta River Basin (REWarD Volta River Basin)
REWarD is a flagship initiative focused on the Volta River Basin funded by the Adaptation Fund, which spans six countries in West Africa. Its goal is to reverse ecosystem degradation by promoting sustainable land and water management, restoring wetlands and forests, and strengthening community resilience to climate impacts. The programme integrates climate adaptation into basin-level governance, ensuring that both ecosystems and livelihoods are protected against floods, droughts, and other climate risks.
