Drought is one of the most complex and far-reaching natural hazards, affecting water resources, food systems, energy, ecosystems, public health, livelihoods, and economic development. Climate change, increasing water demand, land degradation, and urbanization are intensifying drought risks and exposing weaknesses in existing management and response systems.
Many countries still rely on reactive, crisis-driven approaches to drought management, which are often costly and insufficient to address long-term vulnerabilities. There is growing recognition of the need for proactive, risk-based national drought policies that strengthen preparedness, resilience, and sustainable development.
This webinar will bring together policymakers, practitioners, international experts, and development partners across Africa to share knowledge, experiences, and practical guidance on designing and operationalising effective national drought policies. Discussions will cover drought risk management, policy frameworks, early warning systems, cross-sectoral coordination, financing mechanisms, and inclusive stakeholder engagement.
