Water security challenge in South Asia
Water security in the region is threatened by climate change, rapid population growth, and poor management of shared rivers flows across the six land-lock countries in South Asia. Melting Himalayan glaciers, erratic monsoons, and severe groundwater depletion are affecting the water availability for its over 1.9 billion population.
In 2025, Global Water Partnership responded to the challenge with a Global transformation Agenda on Water Investments. The outline for that bold new chapter is the GWP Strategy 2026–2030.
