The Zero Drop water resources protection program is implementing water saving technical solutions in areas facing intense water scarcity, while raising awareness and building capacities to better manage and conserve water resources. It is implemented in close collaboration with public authorities, responding to specific needs and particularities of different communities. Interventions are donated to and managed by public authorities, in order to continue to offer benefits over time.
Zero Drop’ builds on the experience accumulated through 20 years of collaboration between GWP-Med and The Coca-Cola Foundation. Across Greece, Cyprus, Malta and Italy, the GWP-Med/Coca-Cola partnership has yielded 133 technical applications resulting in the saving of 2.6 billion liters of water in Mediterranean water-scarce islands and mainland coastal areas. More than 380,000 beneficiaries have benefited from these interventions, as well as youth engagement and educational activities designed to build capacities around water management.
Specifically in Greece, the partnership between GWP-Med/Coca-Cola partnership started in 2006 with the identification of the most water stressed island areas and the design of technical interventions. The first projects were concluded in 2008. By 2026, more than 80 water protection and conservation projects have been designed and implemented across 38 islands and cities. These initiatives have already benefited more than 212,000 citizens, while also helping to secure billions of liters of water annually.
Indicatively, through the Mission Water Initiative in Greece, which was part of the Non-Conventional Water Resources Programme in the Mediterranean, 33 islands were supported reaching 91,000 beneficiaries, in the areas of Cyclades, Dodecanese, and North Aegean.
