On 15 June 2026, Hungary joined the annual celebration of Danube Day with an interactive event held at the Danube Museum Esztergom. The celebration brought together more than 150 schoolchildren, teachers, and representatives of water and environmental organisations for a day dedicated to the protection and sustainable management of the Danube River.

Under the 2026 motto “The Danube Connects”, participants engaged in a series of interactive educational activities designed to raise awareness about rivers, biodiversity, climate resilience, and water protection. Through games, puzzles, creative exercises, and hands-on demonstrations, children explored the ecological importance of the Danube and its role in everyday life.

A highlight of the programme was the “Danube Passport”, which guided participants through thematic stations focused on aquatic ecosystems, flood protection, environmental awareness, and climate change adaptation. By completing tasks and collecting stamps, children deepened their understanding of water-related challenges while also receiving small rewards for their engagement.

The event also introduced the Danube Art Master 2026 competition. At a dedicated creative station, participants experimented with natural materials to create three-dimensional artworks inspired by the river, encouraging creative expression connected to nature and water.

Organised through the cooperation of Hungarian institutions active in water management, environmental protection, and education, the event highlighted the Danube as both a vital natural resource and a unifying link between communities across the basin.

Danube Day remains one of the most important public awareness initiatives in the Danube region, helping to inspire the next generation to value and protect shared water resources through education, creativity, and direct experience with nature.

GWP Hungary through its engagement in Danube Basin cooperation contributes to educating younger generations and fostering stronger connections between communities and their shared water resources.
