The region is increasingly affected by declining water levels, prolonged droughts, floods, landslides, and rising temperatures. Scientific evidence and lived experience confirm the close link between water stress and climate change, with severe implications for livelihoods and national economies.
Climate change threatens progress toward global development goals and is exacerbated by environmental degradation and reliance on rain-fed agriculture, which accounts for over 80% of livelihoods in many countries.
GWP-EA, working with partners such as the Swedish Government, UNEP, and the Nile Basin Initiative, supports climate adaptation and mitigation through assessments, research, policy dialogue, and advocacy to build resilient societies and economies.
Effective responses require:
• Climate-responsive policies
• Behaviour and practice change across sectors
• Stronger science–policy–practice linkages
• Low-regret investments
• Climate financing mechanisms at all levels
