Who We Are
The Global Water Partnership Eastern Africa (GWPEA) is one of the thirteen regional networks of the Global Water Partnership (GWP) serving the Eastern African region. It was constituted in 2003 by stakeholders to support the sustainable development and management of water resources at all levels in the region. GWPEA works with governments across nine countries, that is, Burundi, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, and Uganda, partners, and Country Water Partnerships to advance water security and climate resilience across Eastern Africa
Guided by the GWP Strategy 2026–2030, GWPEA promotes Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), strengthens governance systems, and supports regional cooperation on shared water challenges. The Secretariat, hosted at the Nile Basin Initiative in Entebbe, coordinates programmes, partnerships, and knowledge that help countries plan, invest, and collaborate for a more water-secure and climate-resilient region.
Why We Exist
Why does GWP Eastern Africa (GWP-EA) exist? What purpose does it serve, and which challenges does it address?
GWP-EA exists to support countries in Eastern Africa and the Greater Horn of Africa to achieve water security, climate resilience, and sustainable development through the promotion and application of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Working through multi-stakeholder Country Water Partnerships, GWP-EA addresses interconnected regional challenges that undermine livelihoods, ecosystems, and economic growth.

How We Work
How does GWPEA address water and climate challenges?Â
GWPEA addresses water and climate-related challenges through a coherent set of approaches, tools, and partnerships designed to influence policy, practice, and mindsets across Eastern Africa. Our work is anchored in four mutually reinforcing pillars:Â Â
Together, these enable GWPEA to act as a convener, knowledge broker, advocate, and capacity builder for sustainable water and climate resilience solutions.Â
