Framework for Improving Water Balance and Nutrient Mitigation by Applying Small Water Retention Measures

Short project description: FramWat addressed increasing floods, droughts, and water pollution in Central Europe by promoting nature-based solutions and small water retention measures as an alternative to traditional grey infrastructure approaches. The project focused on strengthening the landscape’s natural buffer capacity to improve water balance, reduce sediment transport, and enhance nutrient retention. By translating existing scientific knowledge on natural and small water retention measures into practical river basin management tools, FramWat supported more sustainable, ecosystem-based water management and planning across Central Europe.

 Project objectives:  

  • Strengthen regional frameworks for flood, drought, and pollution mitigation  
  • Promote the systematic application of natural and small water retention measures (N(S)WRM)  
  • Improve water balance, nutrient mitigation, and sediment control at catchment level  
  • Support integration of nature-based solutions into River Basin Management Plans  
  • Enhance horizontal integration between water management, land use, agriculture, forestry, and nature protection  

Role of GWP CEE in the project: GWP CEE contributed to stakeholder engagement and capacity building by facilitating dialogue between municipalities, water authorities, agricultural and forestry stakeholders, and nature protection agencies. GWP CEE supported participatory planning processes, promoted integrated water resources management principles, and helped translate project results into practical guidance for river basin planning and implementation.
