Reducing the flood risk through floodplain restoration along the Danube River and tributaries

Duration: June 2018 – November 2020
Funding mechanism: Interreg Danube Transnational Programme
Status: Completed project
Short project description: The Danube Floodplain project addressed increasing flood risks in the Danube River Basin while supporting biodiversity conservation and sustainable water management. In response to recurrent catastrophic floods and the requirements of the EU Floods Directive, the project promoted coordinated, transnational approaches that do not conflict with Water Framework Directive objectives. By focusing on floodplain restoration, natural water retention measures, and the integration of green and grey infrastructure, the project strengthened knowledge and cooperation among Danube countries to enhance flood resilience and ecosystem services for local communities.
Project objectives:
- Improve transnational flood risk management in the Danube River Basin
- Promote floodplain restoration and preservation as a key tool for flood protection and biodiversity enhancement
- Support integrated water management approaches combining grey and green infrastructure
- Strengthen cooperation and knowledge exchange among authorities, practitioners, and stakeholders
Role of GWP CEE in the project : GWP CEE contributed to the project through its expertise in integrated water resources management and stakeholder engagement. GWP CEE supported transnational cooperation, knowledge exchange, and dissemination of project outputs, helping to connect policy objectives with practical implementation and to promote the uptake of floodplain restoration approaches across the Danube region.
