Circular City Re.Solution – Circular Flow Systems for Sustainable Urban Environments

Duration: 2018 – 2022
Funding mechanism: COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology)
Status: Completed project

Short project description: The COST Action Circular City Re.Solution responded to increasing resource scarcity, urbanisation, and climate change by promoting a systemic transformation of cities towards circular and sustainable models. The Action focused on integrating circular economy concepts with nature-based solutions (NBS) and green infrastructure to address urban challenges such as heat islands, flooding, water and nutrient management, waste recovery, and food production. By applying a holistic, systems-based perspective, the Action supported the development of resilient, healthy, and resource-efficient urban environments across Europe.

 Project objectives:

  • Build an interdisciplinary platform connecting urban planners, engineers, economists, and social and natural scientists
  •  Develop a common language and shared understanding of circular economy and nature-based solutions for cities
  •  Promote circular flow systems for managing water, nutrients, energy, and materials in urban environments
  •  Test and advance the hypothesis that circular systems implementing NBS lead to resilient and sustainable cities
  •  Support knowledge exchange, research collaboration, and capacity building across Europe

Role of GWP CEE in the project: GWP CEE contributed to the COST Action by supporting knowledge dissemination, capacity building, and awareness raising on circular cities and nature-based solutions. GWP CEE coordinated the preparation and delivery of the online course “Nature-Based Solutions for Creating Circular Cities”, facilitating collaboration among experts and ensuring the translation of scientific knowledge into practical learning materials. Through these activities, GWP CEE promoted integrated water and resource management principles and supported practitioners and decision-makers in applying circular city concepts in practice.
