Strengthening cooperation between river basin management planning and flood risk prevention to enhance the status of waters of the Tisza River Basin

Duration: January 2017 – September 2019
Funding mechanism: Interreg Danube Transnational Programme
Status: Completed project

Short project description: The JOINTISZA project addressed growing pressures on water resources in the Tisza River Basin, including over-exploitation, water regime modifications, pollution, and increasing flood risks intensified by climate change. The project focused on strengthening the integration between river basin management (RBM) and flood risk management planning in line with EU legislation. By enhancing cooperation among countries sharing the basin and actively involving key stakeholders, JOINTISZA supported more coordinated, sustainable, and climate-resilient water management approaches across the Tisza River Basin.

 Project objectives:

  •  Improve integration between river basin management and flood risk management planning
  • Strengthen cooperation among countries sharing the Tisza River Basin
  • Support implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive and Floods Directive
  • Enhance stakeholder involvement in RBM and flood risk prevention processes
  • Improve the ecological and chemical status of waters in the Tisza River Basin
