Drought Risk in the Danube Region

Duration: January 2017 – September 2019
Funding mechanism: Interreg Danube Transnational Programme
Status: Completed project
Short project description: Water scarcity and droughts frequently affect the Danube region, causing significant economic, environmental, and social impacts. Despite recurring severe drought events, drought has long been addressed mainly through reactive crisis management, with limited coordination and preparedness. The DriDanube project responded to this challenge by promoting a shift towards proactive drought risk management. The project strengthened cooperation among countries and institutions in the Danube region and supported the development of tools and approaches for improved drought monitoring, early warning, risk assessment, and decision-making.
Project objectives:
- Increase the capacity of the Danube region to manage drought-related risks
- Support the transition from reactive to proactive drought management
- Improve drought monitoring, early warning, and impact assessment
- Strengthen cooperation among operational services, authorities, and stakeholders
- Enhance preparedness and response throughout the drought management cycle
Role of GWP CEE in the project: GWP CEE contributed to the project by supporting stakeholder engagement, communication, and knowledge exchange across the Danube region. GWP CEE helped promote integrated drought management principles, facilitated cooperation among national and regional actors, and supported dissemination of project results to policymakers, professionals, and end users to strengthen preparedness and drought risk awareness.
