Inspiring a New Generation to Care for the DanubeYour Attractive Heading

The Danube Art Master (DAM) 2025 competition, coordinated by Global Water Partnership Central and Eastern Europe under the mandate of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River, once again demonstrated the power of creativity in fostering environmental awareness among young people across the Danube River Basin.

Under the theme “Our Danube – Our Future,” the competition engaged children and youth aged 6–18, encouraging them to explore rivers, water protection, and sustainability through artistic expression.

Strong participation across the Danube region

In 2025, the competition was successfully implemented in 13 countries, involving:

  • 1,122 participants
  • 258 schools
  • 736 submitted artworks

Participants contributed in three categories—Art, Photography, and Video—with photography emerging as the most popular. The submissions reflected a deep connection between young people and their local river environments, as well as a growing awareness of environmental challenges.

Regional cooperation in action

The success of DAM 2025 was built on strong collaboration between GWP CEE and a network of National Organisers, including NGOs and environmental organisations. While GWP CEE ensured overall coordination and technical guidance, National Organisers worked closely with schools, teachers, and local communities to promote the competition and manage national-level implementation.

Innovation through digital tools

A key innovation in 2025 was the introduction of the Protalentis online platform, used for submitting and evaluating artworks. This step significantly improved efficiency, data management, and transparency in the international jury process, while also providing valuable insights for further optimisation in future editions.

Visibility and outreach

A coordinated communication campaign, including the hashtag #OurDanubeOurFuture, helped amplify the reach of the competition. The DAM Quick Book 2025 supported teachers and schools in integrating the competition into educational activities, while national campaigns and local events further strengthened engagement.

Partnerships that make an impact

The successful implementation of DAM 2025 was made possible thanks to the continued support of ERSTE Group. Their contribution enabled expanded activities and further development of digital tools, enhancing both the reach and quality of the competition.

Looking ahead

Danube Art Master 2025 reaffirmed the importance of combining environmental education, creativity, and regional cooperation. With ongoing improvements to digital platforms, strengthened partnerships, and growing engagement, the competition is well positioned to expand its impact even further in 2026.
